Recap: Breakdown of Sunrise v. Liberty game

On Friday Sep. 21, Sunrise faced Liberty in one of the most talked about football games of the season. However, once again Sunrise’s performance fell short.

Varsity captain and wide receiver John Drago weighed in on the details.

“[Going into the game] we expected to win, we expected to dominate,” Drago said, senior. Drago has been on the varsity football team since his freshman year.

“We felt confident [going into the second half,” Drago said. “Normally at that point, we’re down. But, at half time we were actually tied. We were eager because our game plan was working.”

Almost immediately after the third quarter started, Liberty’s team began scoring touchdowns. So where did it all go wrong?

“We had a lot of turnovers in the game,” Drago said. “We made a lot of mistakes and they [Liberty] capitalized on them.”

“[During the second half] a lot of people started leaving,” senior Elina Gabrielyan said. “The crowd stopped chanting and they lost hope.”

At the end of the night, the final score was 56-21, Liberty.

“We were obviously disappointed in our performance; we honestly felt like we let the school down,” Drago said. “We’re hoping to correct the mistakes and make some changes so we can come back stronger in the future.”
