Dodge Diabetes tournament brings competitive spirit

Sunrise Mountain Student Council is holding a dodgeball tournament Thursday, Feb. 2, at 6 p.m. to raise money for the American Diabetes Association.

The theme of the tournament is Dodge Diabetes. The idea is to raise money through donations and bracelets being sold for three dollars during the Spirit Week event. After paying an $18 entrance fee, students can create teams of up to six players.

Senior Taylor Wetnight, who has participated in this event before, enjoys spending time creating a team name and theme.

“We’re ‘What Would Jesus Dodge’,” said Wetnight. “Maybe that’ll scare the teams into [not] hitting us with dodgeballs.”

Though Wetnight admits she is unsure about her team’s chances of getting far in the competition, junior Jacob Chamberlain believes his team, “The 5 D’s”, is not to be underestimated.

“Most of my team is, like, soccer players, or baseball players, or softball players. They can catch or in some cases kick,” Chamberlain said.

Though he is participating in the games to help support the diabetes cause, he definitely cannot wait to go head to head with his classmates.

“I’m ready to beat Elroy [Masters]. Straight up. I can never beat him in anything,” Chamberlain said.
